Support Groups/Self Help Groups

There are 5 Support Groups established within the service. They are situated in Ballina, Ballinrobe, Achill, Castlebar and Claremorris. A worker from the service attended training with Women’s Aid in ‘Capacity Building through Art’, a programme of support for women who have left abusive relationships, working with them through different art mediums for example, painting, storing telling, sculpting.

When setting up the Support Groups a worker from the service will work with the women for a period of 10-12 weeks. During that time she will help the women establish contracts and ground-rules for the groups and spend time exploring women’s experiences through the various art mediums. This has proved to be very successful in the setting up process of the group where women start to feel much more confident about themselves and their futures. The worker leaves the group effectively to run itself after this period, after having identified areas of interest that they will get involved in as a group. Should they run into any difficulty the worker will return to the group to help solve any problem or difficulty.
