Local Area Networks

Setting up local area networks was recommended in the Report of the Government Task Force on Violence against Women. It also comes within the remit of the Regional Planning Committee on Violence against Women. The Strategy and Action Plan, 'Integrity, Dignity, Safety' of this Service also included facilitating the development of two local networks in identified areas.

In 2001, initial steps were taken to establish two local networks in Louisburgh and Claremorris. Representatives of relevant statutory bodies, service users and community groups were invited to come together to look at ways at addressing the issue of violence against women. Local Area Networks were set up in both towns and, in September, 2002, a part-time worker was appointed by this Service to support their development. This became possible because of funding provided by the Regional Planning Committee on Violence against Women.

The Local Area Networks have prioritised what is most important and achievable in their areas. This includes raising awareness and public education and has resulted in production of leaflets and posters giving information regarding ‘outreach locations’ being held in the town; workshops for teachers, pupils and parents in the local schools; information sessions for women’s groups; articles in the local newspaper. Crisis accommodation is available in both Network areas. One is a unit of accommodation in an established Housing Association and the other is B&B accommodation.

Training for members of the Networks has been provided by this Service and further training is planned.

While the Local Area Networks are still in early stages, the work they are doing is consistent with the community development approach adopted by the Service from the outset. Locally-based responses to domestic violence are important both from the point of view of raising awareness of the issue and encouraging communities to take responsibility for developing responses to it. The support provided by the part-time worker is essential to the on-going maintenance of the groups. Development of an in-built evaluation process is currently under consideration.
